Before the next pandemic, it’s time to regulate indoor air quality

Just like the government mandates clean water and food, scientists argue that well-filtered and ventilated air inside our offices and homes should be guaranteed.

Whenever humans have learned a way that diseases spread, they’ve tried to mitigate that harm with far-reaching changes. We found out water can carry diseases such as cholera, so we built out infrastructure to disinfect our drinking water. We learned food can carry disease-causing germs, so we enacted widespread food safety regulations. Now, researchers are hoping that by acknowledging that COVID-19 can spread through the air, we’ll finally improve our ventilation standards for buildings to mitigate the spread of any airborne disease.

At the beginning of May, more than a year into the COVID-19 pandemic, the CDC updated its guidance on how the virus spreads to acknowledge that when an infected person breathes out respiratory droplets, the virus can travel through the air to infect someone more than 6 feet away and that adding clean air to a space can help mitigate transmission risk. Though the health agency did acknowledge airborne transmission back in October, it’s a change from previous guidance that said most infections came from “close contact,” and something researchers such as Jose-Luis Jimenez, a chemistry professor at University of Colorado, Boulder, have been long awaiting.

Throughout the pandemic, Jimenez has been working with a group of researchers to acknowledge airborne transmission of COVID-19, and to author papers on how to mitigate air transmission. In July, that group gathered even more support from scientists around the world to publish a letter with 239 signatories saying it was time to address COVID-19’s airborne transmission. Now, Jimenez and 38 other researchers have published a piece in the journal Science calling for a “paradigm shift” to combat indoor respiratory infections by making sure building ventilation systems improve, so that they’re filtering and moving clean air into spaces more frequently.

Airborne transmission has long been misunderstood, the researchers write; In the early 1900s, a health figure named Charles Chapin said respiratory diseases were likely spread through close contact via large droplets that quickly fall to the ground; he basically denied that airborne transmission, via smaller particles that could be inhaled, was possible, setting off decades of misconception. In the 1950s, scientists William F. Wells and Richard L. Riley proved that airborne transmission of tuberculosis was possible, but it still didn’t change how we handled indoor air broadly.

“Finally, we hope that it is accepted that not just this virus but all respiratory viruses and diseases likely go substantially or mostly through the air,” Jimenez says, “and we really need to up our game and consider cleaning indoor air, removing viruses, and providing air that doesn’t have pathogens as a priority for our societies, much like providing [clean] water has been a priority.”

The researchers call for mandating monitors of indoor air quality, for instance by outfitting public spaces with CO2 sensors that display how much exhaled air is accumulating in a space. Ventilation and filtration systems should also be improved, with higher standards for removing airborne pathogens than the current standards, which were mostly set for parameters such as temperature, odor control, and energy use. Higher ventilation would come at the costs of higher energy bills, so a “pandemic mode” could be added to buildings, Jimenez says. The normal mode would still offer more protection against respiratory diseases than currently exists, but a “pandemic mode” would ramp up ventilation even more (but also increase energy use) if a disease was rampant.

Retrofitting building systems or ensuring new buildings are up to such levels will come with an initial cost: estimates put it at around 1% of the initial construction costs. “People don’t want to do it if there’s no regulation because they’d rather save 1%,” Jimenez says. Instead, we’re paying for the cost of respiratory diseases—their added health care costs and productivity losses. Already, experts have estimated COVID-19 cost the global economy $1 trillion in 2020. In the U.S. alone, the flu has an annual economic burden of $11.2 billion.

Echoing many other scientists, Jimenez says that the pandemic has put a spotlight on indoor air, a public health issue that has long gone ignored. Now, there’s an opportunity for that paradigm shift. The quality of indoor air has to become a priority, with technology and regulations to ensure that the air inside buildings is clean from colds, flus, and the next possible pandemic, “just as we expect,” the researchers write, “for the water coming out of our taps.”

Why Aren’t We Talking About Destroying COVID in Indoor Air?

An Open Letter on How to Open America

Dear President Biden:

Congratulations on your progress against COVID-19. Masks, testing, distancing, vaccines — all are necessary. But not sufficient.

Any plan to bring America back must deploy technology that can eliminate SARS- CoV-2, the COVID virus, from interior air – safely and immediately.

As the recent letter from 13 public health experts to your COVID Coordinator, CDC Director, and Dr. Fauci warned, contaminated aerosols linger indoors, and action must be taken to limit transmission. “It’s time to stop pussyfooting around the fact that the virus is transmitted mostly through the air,” said Linsey Marr of Virginia

Tech, one of the signers.1

The U.S. is the leader in the technology that can get this job done.

We developed technology, called ActivePure, that destroys the COVID virus in the air and have deployed it for decades. It’s unique, and it works.

By contrast, ventilation does not seek out the virus. Other systems are passive, slow, trap pathogens but don’t destroy them. Many are so dangerous, people can’t even be in the room. By contrast, our technology blasts out sub-microscopic particles that attack viruses and bacteria and destroy them in real time.2 Our system is safe for people and pets, and it works continuously.

It evolved from the NASA space program and is now used by hospitals, schools, offices, restaurants, and other businesses, and in hundreds of thousands of homes.

The technology works not just against SARS-CoV-2 but also against other deadly viruses and bacteria.3 Our FDA-cleared medical device is the subject of a double- blind trial being conducted by the Cleveland Clinic to test ActivePure’s effectiveness against surgical-site infections.4

In battling COVID, mutations are not an obstacle for this technology. It will bring Americans comfort and assurance now and after the pandemic ends.

Recent testing by an FDA-compliant, military-grade laboratory found more
than 99.96% of airborne SARS-CoV-2 is eliminated in three minutes.5 Other U.S. companies may have similar solutions in the future, but spending billions on inferior systems now is wasteful.

Our technology is bringing millions of people back to the life they deserve.

Already, schools that use our technology are back in session – your goal. But every school in America should be benefiting from the science. So should meat-packing plants, grocery stores, health clinics, arenas and restaurants struggling to survive.

As more and more public health experts are recognizing, destroying COVID indoors is critical to ending the pandemic. I urge you and the nation’s governors and mayors to encourage – or, where you can, require — the use of the best technology now.
It is the missing link. Bringing America back depends on it.

Respectfully,

Joseph Urso

Clean (indoor) air should be here to stay

Before Covid-19, indoor air, or air quality for that matter, was an afterthought. Clean air talk mostly focused on pollution in cities. We also knew common viruses are airborne but few precautions were often taken. Air quality is not only an issue for asthmatics or those with allergies but one that is important for everyone’s wellbeing and quality of life.

It is revisionist history to claim we should have known better. We at NevadaAir prefer to look forward, but given everything we have learnt over the last ten months, it is no longer acceptable to go back to the old ways. We need to take a more active approach to indoor air quality.

Clean air should be part of our wellbeing plan, along with exercising regularly and eating better. We spend 90% of our time indoors, and much like outdoors, this air is polluted. Regardless of definition, air pollution is not good for our health.

The overall benefits of better air quality are intuitive, and here we outline some of them, but first and foremost is personal health. Clean air is just better for us and our quality of life.

Beyond the direct effects on health, which include getting sick less, taking an active approach to air quality means having the peace of mind and comfort of knowing every breath is as pure as possible. This comfort translates to greater ease, happiness and productivity. The comfort extends past your own coworkers or employees, but to your clients too. This is especially important in schools, gyms, care homes and other client-facing businesses.

Now the theory is clear, but applying it to the real world is what matters. Wherever possible and assuming the outdoor air is good, the WHO recommends to leave windows open and create air flows in our workplaces. A simple solution, but one that winter, rain and outside noise makes impracticable, and one that hinges on outdoor air being clean.

The more realistic solution is to have mechanical ventilation, but we need to, and should, take a further step and be proactive. By adding a technology that inactivates the viruses and bacteria in the air and on surfaces to a mechanical ventilation system, you find yourself with a state-of-the-art approach to improving air quality.

We at NevadaAir are a UK based distributor of ActivePure® Technology. It is the fastest and most powerful air and surface purification technology in the market. This plug-and-play device can operate 24/7 and minimises contamination in real-time without the use of chemicals or ozone. It has also scientifically been proven it kills Covid-19, along with other viruses and bacteria on both air and surfaces, such as mould, fungus, MRSA, E-Coli and Staph.

Active purifiers, such as those in our range with ActivePure® Technology, are essential to stop the spread of Covid-19 and as it becomes endemic, a longer-term solution is needed. Companies must address re-contamination and cross-contamination long term, and the technology we represent is uniquely suited for that, and thus reduces the risk businesses face from this. Beyond risk, it is also good business to provide indoor air quality to your

workers and clients. Companies offer a variety of perks from gym memberships to health insurance and meals, so why not high-quality indoor air?

The pandemic has made air quality much more front-of-mind but we need to carry on demanding air quality for ourselves and being proactive in this pursuit. We should ensure indoor air quality is here to stay and we have the power to do so.

Traditional ‘passive’ technologies, such as HEPA, remove contaminants only if and when they travel through the purification unit. They do not reduce surface contamination at all and do not adequately reduce airborne contaminants. Our proprietary ActivePure® Technology ‘actively’ targets contaminants in the air and on surfaces, eliminating them on contact.

ActivePure® Technology is derived from NASA Technology as used in the International Space Station. It is the only Certified Space Technology in the world in its class. In 2017, ActivePure® was inducted into the Space Technology Hall of Fame, one of only 75 technologies honored in the past 30 years.

ActivePure® Technology has consistently proven to safely control and neutralize contaminants, such as viruses, bacteria, mold, fungi, and VOCs, in numerous tests and studies. Extensive laboratory testing conducted at Kansas State University showed ActivePure® Technology to be effective against the RNA Virus, DNA Virus, H1N1, H5N8, MRSA, Staph Streptococcus, E. Coli, Listeria, Bacillus spp, Stachybotrys Chartarum, and more. These studies have shown that ActivePure® can reduce as much as 99.9999% of surface and airborne contaminants. Testing at the University of Cincinnati established the extraordinary effectiveness of ActivePure® Technology in safely destroying airborne contaminants.

Our ActivePure® Technology has been successfully and safely used in hospitals, homes, businesses, doctors’ offices, sports and fitness facilities, schools, and other applications throughout the world. ActivePure® has helped millions; it can help you.

NASA-Based ActivePure Technology® Rapidly Eliminates 99.9% of Airborne SARS-CoV-2 Virus in FDA-Compliant Military Lab Tests

DALLASDec. 14, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — ActivePure Technologies, LLC, announced that its air purifying technology inactivated over 99.9% of highly concentrated airborne SARS-CoV-2 virus in an enclosed setting in just 3 minutes, below detectable levels. Testing of the ActivePure Technology® was conducted by one of the world’s top biosafety testing facilities, the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), which primarily tests for the U.S. military and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

“These results demonstrate the effectiveness of the technology in a laboratory setting,” said Dr. William S. Lawrence, PhD, director of the Aerobiology Services Division at UTMB’s Galveston National Laboratory.

ActivePure Technologies foresees widespread use of the technology to reduce the amount of SARS-CoV-2 virus present in the air and on hard surfaces in commercial, residential, and medical settings. ActivePure Technology has been on the retail market as an air purifier for more than 10 years. It is installed as part of HVAC systems or as the core technology inside the company’s portable air purification units. ActivePure Technologies currently sells about 500,000 ActivePure units annually across all brands and product lines but is seeing an enormous increase in demand from its distributors due to the pandemic.

“ActivePure Technology enables us to go on the offense against airborne coronavirus with real-time elimination of viral particles so we can reclaim the spaces – the gyms, restaurants, diners, theaters, beauty salons and barber shops – that are near and dear to our hearts,” said Joe Urso, Chairman and CEO of ActivePure Technologies, LLC. “Unlike conventional, passive, filtration-based air purifiers, ActivePure works immediately and does not require capture or exposure time. It rapidly and continuously fills a room with virus-neutralizing particles that instantly break viruses down to their component parts, rendering them harmless.”

“ActivePure surrounds a person with protective virus-inactivating air,” Urso added, “which is especially important in a medical setting.  I think of it as a form of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).”

The Cleveland Clinic is conducting a 2-year study with ActivePure units in its operating rooms to see if the technology can reduce surgical site infections. Daniel Sessler, M.D., chair of outcomes research, said, “The Cleveland Clinic continuously adapts practices to ensure we are providing the safest care for our patients.”

“In this deadly pandemic,” Urso added, “people must have air they can trust.”

The UTMB research was conducted in late November 2020 in a Bio Safety Level (BSL)-3 and -4 laboratory, which studies the world’s most deadly pathogens.Currently, nearly all BSL-4 analysis is dedicated to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and military testing. According to the CDC, BSL-4 facilities “are used to study agents that pose a high risk of life-threatening disease.”2

The tests were done in triplicate, according to FDA guidelines and protocols. Live SARS-Cov-2 virus was sprayed into a test chamber at extremely high concentrations (7+ logs, or over 10 million particles per milliliter).

Within 3 minutes, ActivePure Technology-based Aerus® Pure & Clean and Vollara® Air & Surface Pro units, calibrated to their lowest setting of only 29 cubic feet per minute of air movement, reduced the concentration of the virus to no more than 1.6 logs, a reduction of 99.96%. The lab was able only to measure down to 1.6 logs, so the actual results may have resulted in a 99.99% or greater reduction. 3 The units only used the ActivePure Technology; all other purification technologies in the units were disabled or removed.

Andy Eide, Vice President of Engineering of ActivePure® stated, “We believe the best defense is a good offense. Going out on the attack and proactively neutralizing SARS-CoV-2 viruses is a highly effective way to minimize the amount of virus that reaches your mask or lands on surfaces you may touch.” He added, “We manufacture nearly 100 different products with ActivePure, addressing concerns in every imaginable environment from homes to offices, hotel rooms, elevators, and even cars.”

A full report by the lab is expected before the holidays, said Urso.

He added, “The November research found that ActivePure technology produces enormous reductions in three minutes, but shorter durations were not tested. We will now be testing efficacy in just 30, 60 and 120 seconds to see how quickly we can achieve similar or better results. And we will be working with the BSL-3 and 4 labs to test other highly contagious pathogens in the future.”

About ActivePure Technologies, LLC

In 2017, ActivePure Technologies LLC, formerly known as Aerus Holdings LLC, was recognized by the Space Foundation as the only surface and air-purification technology to effectively adapt and market technology originally developed for NASA to improve the quality of life for all humanity, when it was inducted into the Space Technology Hall of Fame at a reception sponsored by SpaceX.4

ActivePure is a patented scientific process that dispatches super-charged, sub-microscopic particles at tremendous speed. These particles are created by reactions between ambient water and oxygen molecules, a patented matrix coating, and a specific wavelength of UVC light. The particles collide with viruses, bacteria, and air pollutants and immediately turn them into harmless elements.

The technology has been used for several years by HVAC installers and as portable units because of its proven pathogen-killing power. Over one million ActivePure systems are currently in use to help safeguard front-line workers in hospitals such as the Cleveland Clinic and in government buildings, including the Texas State Capitol, homes, restaurants, offices, and other public spaces.

The FDA in June cleared ActivePure technology, deployed in an Aerus Medical Guardian unit, as a Class II Medical Device for use in occupied rooms to inactivate six different pathogens, including an RNA virus similar to SARS-CoV-2.5 Previous research found that ActivePure inactivates the COVID-19 virus on surfaces.6

Other publicized systems, such as HEPA, UV light, and MERV-13 are passive, slow, and may trap pathogens, but fail to destroy them. Many others are so dangerous that people and pets cannot be in the room when they are operating.

Air purifier company seeks emergency FDA approval for device that rids indoor air of virus

As the country races to approve and roll out a coronavirus vaccine, one company is seeking federal approval to attack the ongoing coronavirus crisis from a different angle.

Last week, Dallas-based ActivePure filed an application with the Food and Drug Administration seeking approval to use its range of plug-in air purifiers against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes covid-19. The devices are used in homes throughout the United States, utilizing technology shown in studies to kill airborne viruses within enclosed spaces.

Over the summer, the company’s Aerus Medical Guardian was designated a medical device by the FDA for use in health-care settings. At the time, it was shown to kill 99.98 percent of the live virus on surfaces within seven hours. Now, after further testing, the company says more of its products are effective against the virus. But this time it’s tackling the air.

Recent lab tests revealed ActivePure’s patented technology can kill airborne virus particles in three minutes, the company says. When turned on, its Aerus Pure and Clean and Vollara Air and Surface Pro devices work continuously to reduce pathogens indoors, even when people are present in the room.

“We are seeking the (emergency use authorization) for use in all indoor environments so that these areas will be safer for people all over the world in this time of pandemic and beyond,” said Joe Urso, CEO and chairman of ActivePure.

Hundreds of thousands of ActivePure filtration devices are installed throughout the country, the company says. Its technology is available in free-standing units as well as HVAC systems within hospitals, government buildings, restaurants, office buildings and homes. Prices start at $199 and can go as high as $1,499.

It offers its line of products through various HVAC contractors, Aerus franchisees and Vollara distributors. The company says it will sell directly to consumers “soon.”

While many home-based air purifiers rely on passive HEPA filters or ultraviolet light to kill contaminants, ActivePure uses active, NASA-inspired technology to disinfect the air.

Standard air purifiers use a fan and filter system that sucks in unclean air, captures contaminants and pushes clean air back into the room. In the filtration company’s system, a fan brings in free oxygen and water molecules and then converts them into special molecules as they pass through an internal UV light.

Those ionized particles are then sent back out into a room to find and destroy microorganisms.

“Going out on the attack and proactively neutralizing covid-19 viruses is a highly effective way to minimize the amount of virus that reaches your mask or lands on surfaces you may touch,” said Andy Eide, vice president of engineering at ActivePure in a statement.

The disinfecting method has been shown to work against other RNA viruses, DNA viruses, bacteria, mold and fungi, the company says.

NASA developed similar technology referred to as an ethylene “scrubber” in the mid-1990s to help with growing plants. The device would draw in ethylene, a gas emitted by plants that speeds up decay, and convert it into water and carbon dioxide, which help plants grow.

In 2017, the space agency acknowledged the filtration company’s efforts to introduce the technology to people’s homes.

ActivePure used CDC-approved labs that tested its products against the novel strain of coronavirus.

Researchers found ActivePure’s air cleaners could reduce the virus’s concentration in the air by more than 99 percent, according to the company. During testing, the air purifiers were turned to their lowest setting of 29-cubic-feet per minute of air movement.

ActivePure, which is owned by the 96-year-old company Aerus Holdings, isn’t the only air purification firm seeking to combat the ongoing coronavirus outbreak. In September, Hong Kong-based Aurabeat said it received FDA permission to market its device as a medical-grade air purifier under the agency’s modified enforcement policy amid the public health crisis.

More may be on the way. Study trials found the PYURE Company’s air purifier reduced airborne SARS-CoV-2 below the limit of detection in 80 minutes.

The air-cleaning technology may serve as one way to reduce exposure to the virus, which health experts say is spread primarily via respiratory droplets. However, it’s far from a cure or vaccine.

The Environmental Protection Agency warns that disinfecting the air alone is not enough to protect people from the coronavirus. “When used along with other best practices recommended by CDC and others, filtration can be part of a plan to protect people indoors,” the EPA says.
